In this collection of short humorous essays originally written for the popular media, playwright, novelist and screenwriter Drew Hayden Taylor sends his readers fascinating and exotic postcards from his globetrotting adventures, always on the lookout for the NEWS about aboriginal peoples around the world. Organized around the thematics suggested by the four cardinal directions central to the Ojibwa peoples—East for beginnings and youth; South for journeys both physical and spiritual; West for maturity and responsibility; and North for contemplation and wisdom; these communiqués are sent not so much to instruct as they are to delight.

Never without a healthy dose of irony, humour and often unabashed laughter, these “postcards” offer their readers unexpected insights into the intense and often hilarious complexities of our new multicultural reality. Throughout his travels, Taylor has discovered that the four cardinal points are central to most First Nations’ teachings concerning the landscape and how to live on it to survive, build families and communities, create cultures and develop notions of spirituality and identity. This is not, however, a seamless or even necessarily recognizable paradigm from place to place throughout North America, and there is plenty of room for doubt, misunderstandings and unintentional social faux pas even among and between aboriginal peoples themselves. One of the great discoveries of this collection is that each of our First Nations boasts its own traditions—go a hundred miles in any direction and you are no longer on certain ground with respect to the meanings, attributes, even the colours definitive of these cardinal points of the social compass.

Barbara is a full-blood Dakota woman originally from Sioux Valley reserve in Manitoba, Canada. As a writer, Barbara conveys her many experiences and the painful upheavals she endured as a child through her fictional stories and poems.

At the tender age of five, she was taken from her loving birth family and since then, spent her childhood in foster homes, an orphanage, two adoption homes and ultimately, two psychiatric hospitals.

Throughout the years, with help from teachers, friends and special mentors, she discovered her passion and gift of writing. Barbara shares and expresses herself utilizing her humor and positive attitude within the content of each story and poem in hopes of helping others through life’s difficult situations.

Time spent away after being taken off the reserve during the infamous Sixties Scoop (The practice of removing large numbers of aboriginal children from their families and giving them over to white middle-class parents was discontinued in the mid-’80s, after Ontario chiefs passed resolutions against it and a Manitoba judicial inquiry harshly condemned it.)

John Trudell is an acclaimed poet, national recording artist, actor and activist whose international following reflects the universal language of his words, work and message. Trudell (Santee Sioux) was a spokesperson for the Indian of All Tribes occupation of Alcatraz Island from 1969 to 1971. He then worked with the American Indian Movement (AIM), serving as Chairman of AIM from 1973 to 1979. In February of 1979, a fire of unknown origin killed Trudell’s wife, three children and mother-in-law. It was through this horrific tragedy that Trudell began to find his voice as an artist and poet, writing, in his words, “to stay connected to this reality.”

In 1982, Trudell began recording his poetry to traditional Native music and in 1983 he released his debut album Tribal Voice on his own Peace Company label. Trudell then teamed up with the late legendary Kiowa guitarist Jesse Ed Davis. Together, they recorded three albums during the 1980′s. The first of these, AKA Graffiti Man, was released in 1986 and dubbed the best album of the year by Bob Dylan. AKA Graffiti Man served early notice of Trudell’s singular ability to express fundamental truths through a unique mix of poetry, Native music, blues and rock. Since that time, Trudell has released seven more albums plus a digitally re-mastered collection of his early Peace Company cassettes. His 2002 CD, Bone Days, was executive produced by Academy Award winning actress Angelina Jolie and released on the Daemon Records label.

His double album, Madness & The Moremes, showcases more than five years of new music and includes special Ghost Tracks of old favorite Trudell tunes made with legendary Kiowa guitarist Jesse Ed Davis. This internet only release offers a full range of classic Trudell poetry — there are lyrics filled with penetrating insight and others with knock out humor, all put to some of the best music Bad Dog has ever made together. In addition to his music career, Trudell has played roles in a number of feature films, including a lead role in the Mirimax movie Thunderheart and a major part in Sherman Alexie’s Smoke Signals. He most recently played Coyote in Hallmark’s made for television movie, Dreamkeeper.

Rick was born in a field of corn called Los Angeles but raised on a 100 acre farm with no electricity and a wood burning stove in Crescent City, California. He returned to the city at age 7. He obtained a Bachelors Degree from California State University, Northridge in communication. Acting and Modeling soon followed when he was discovered by legendary Male Super Model agent Omar Alberto. Kevin Lawrence Locke aka Catch the Hawk, 52 years old, is from the Leech Lake Ojibwe Nation.

He graduated from the Leech Lake Tribal College in 2010 with an Associate of Arts degree in Indigenous Leadership.

He has four children Tara locke, Cory Locke, Corrin Locke and Jackson locke.

He is an ambassodor, drumkeeper, anishanabemowin tutor, helped with Anishinabe Adoopowin, and served as student senate teasurer, did a special address in Ashinabemowin at his graduation, and presented an Anishanabemowin Poem at AIHEC.

He was the AIM eagle staff carrier 2008 Longest Walk 2. He visited president Bush summer house with DJ Banks when Cindy Sheehan protesting the war. He participated in the Hwy 55 protest. Was part of Camp Truth in Fon Du Lac. also involved with Sacred Fire in Cass lake, MN, that went for two years.

He is heading to Santa FE American Institute of Arts Museum Studies… His goal is to become repatriation officer to get our stolen objects and bring them home.

Gerald Auger, A National Native Role Model, Entrepreneur, Director, Producer, Writer and Actor who has appeared on a TV series and a few movie appearances to his credit, Auger is living proof that if the spirit is willing, the sky is the limit.

His latest film projects are a highly anticipated sequel entitled FUBAR 2, a turn of the century film called Western Confidential where he portrays an Indian Guide/Interpreter, a coming of age film entitled “Alone” where he plays a native cop in search of his best friend that went missing. All 3 films are scheduled to be released in 2010.

Gerald plays “Soaring Eagle” in the first episode, a lead role, in the six-part mini-series Into The West for Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks. Auger can also be currently seen in the IMAX spectacle Lewis and Clark The Journey West and appeared in the Hallmark Entertainment TV mini-series Dreamkeeper.

Previously, Auger snared a supporting role in the movie, My West, starring David Bowie and Harvey Keitel. The project for Pacific Pictures, filmed in Italy, marked the first time a Western used First Nations actors in its cast. Luna – Spirit of the Whale with an all star cast, Adam Beach, Graham Greene, Tantoo Cardinal and Jason Priestly of Beverley Hills 90210 and a film based on true events entitled Klatsasssin.

His latest film as writer/director will premiered on CBC/APTN/Sask TV entitled “Honor Thy Father.” The premise for the film is Native Spirituality meets God in Moccasin country. He is currently working on the sequel entitled Honor Thy Father – Our Journey Home.

One of his latest projects is being cast in the Opening/Closing ceremonies for the upcoming Arctic Winter Games in March 2010 as Anook – The Rockman for “The Heroes Journey.”

In 1995, after graduation, the Governor General of Canada awarded Gerald the National Native Role Model title in 1996/97. He spent the next two years visiting more than 30 communities across Canada, inspiring his aboriginal peers, relating stories about his experiences and bonding with locals through a number of cultural events and ceremonies. Gerald was also the first Aboriginal recipient of the Rotary International Integrity Award in 1999 for the Avenue of Nations.

Such achievements seemed insurmountable when Auger left an abusive home environment for a turbulent life on the streets several years ago. Abandoning his life on the reserve he spent his youth drifting between the East and West coasts, witnessing the horrors of street life, from the urban squalor afflicting his people. But when he saw his companions die one by one, Auger quickly came to terms with his situation: either 25 years behind bars or six feet under.

Instead, Auger decided to get a life. He went back home, cleaned himself up and attended college, where he wound up with an educational background specializing in Marketing/Management and Small Business Management. During his academic tenure, Auger became president of the campus’s Student Association, President of the Student Society for Alberta Vocational College and the Circle for Aboriginal Students at the Grande Prairie Regional College. He received the Charles S. Nobleship Award for Student Leadership from the Department of Advanced Education and the Province of Alberta.

Between acting gigs, voiceover sessions and modeling stints for calendars and posters, Auger is the Chief Executive Officer of Black Eagle Entertainment, of which he is also owner. A business designed to advance aboriginal status in mainstream society and debunk cultural stereotypes of his people. Through Black Eagle Entertainment Auger will produce feature films, documentaries and docudramas.
