Pangea World theater Presents the World Premiere of Ady by Rhiana Yazzie

PANGEA WORLD THEATER PRESENTS THE WORLD PREMIERE OF ADY BY RHIANA YAZZIE

Minneapolis, MN – Pangea World Theater will produce the world premiere play Ady July 9 – 25, 2010 at the Playwrights’ Center. Written by Rhiana Yazzie and directed by Hayley Finn, Ady is a thought provoking story of Adrienne Fidelin (Ady), a dancer from the island of Guadeloupe. The play combines dance and image, history and imagination to bring her story to life. Ady is the final show in Pangea’s Alternate Visions Festival. This Festival has presented readings, works in progress and now this world premiere. It is supported by The Playwrights’ Center, Jerome Foundation, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian Exhibition and Publications and Expressive Arts Program made possible through a generous gift from The Ford Foundation and KFAI.

The jumping off place for this play is a Lee Miller photograph of surrealist artists including Ady, who is naked to the waist. Ady was a dancer from the island of Guadeloupe who dated surrealist photographer, Man Ray in the late 1930’s through 1941 when they were eventually separated by WWII. The two of them were surrounded by the great artists of their time including Picasso, Lee Miller, Leonora Carrington, Max Ernst, among others. Although the other women in this surrealist circle have stories with a beginning middle and end, pieced together by historians and art critics over the years, Ady’s story was lost in the narratives that made those around her great. “She comes alive through the lens of a contemporary Navajo woman who finds that they share the same face,” says playwright Rhiana Yazzie. “At last we see modern art through the eyes and perspective of Native America, a culture, like many indigenous traditions around the world that regularly used the vocabulary of surrealism and abstracts in their art and creation stories. I’ve had the opportunity to recently develop Ady not only through Pangea but also at the New York Public Theater’s New Work Now! and the Playwrights’ Center’s Ruth Easton play lab.”

“We are pleased to present the world premiere of Ady by Rhiana Yazzie,” commented Pangea’s Artistic Director Dipankar Mukherjee. “Pangea commissioned and supported the evolution of this original piece over the past two years. Rhiana’s craft and precision in creating this relevant literature is artistically rich and complex and politically relevant.” He continued, “Pangea’s commitment to Native Artists through presentation of local, national and international artists has enriched the cultural scene in the Twin Cities.”

The cast includes: Leah Nelson and Avia Bushyhead. The artistic staff includes: Rhiana Yazzie (playwright), Hayley Finn (director), Emily Johnson (Choreographer), Mike Wangen (lighting designer), Carolyn Lee Anderson (set design), Pramila Vasudevan (Media Artist), Jeffrey Stolz (Costume Designer) and Phyllis (Mel) Thorne (stage manager).

Rhiana Yazzie is a Navajo playwright originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico. This year Rhiana is a Playwrights’ Center Jerome Fellow for the second time since 2006. She is also a Playwrights’ Center Core Writer and has been jointly commissioned by the Ashland Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the NY Public Theater to write a play for American Revolutions: the United States History Cycle. Rhiana’s plays have been seen on the stages of SteppingStone Theatre for Youth Development, Teatro del Pueblo, and Mixed Blood Theatre. She is also an award-winning writer of plays for radio and for youth. Her most recent Theatre for Young Audiences play produced by La Jolla Playhouse, Chile Pod, toured to 17,500 children in Southern California. Her play Ady has also been developed through the New York Public Theater’s New Work Now! and the Playwrights’ Center Ruth Easton Lab. Her website is www.rhianayazzie.com.

Hayley Finn is the Resident Director and Lab Producer at the Playwrights’ Center where she works with some of the nation’s leading and emerging playwrights. Directing credits in the Twin Cities include Hiding In The Open by Kira Obolensky (The History Theatre), Permanence Collection by Kira Obolensky and Ed Bok Lee (Walker Art Center) and Doe by Trista Baldwin (Workhaus Collective). She has directed the New York premieres of works by Sheila Callaghan including Katecrackernuts (The Flea Theater), Scab (Greenwich Street Theater), and Metal (Here Arts Center), Gary Winter’s The Lake (The Flea Theater), Golem and Dead Reckoning (both at Cherry Lane Theatre), Randal David Cook’s Fate’s Imagination (Gotham Stage Company), Rona Munro’s Bold Girls (Urban Stages), The Shoe Box at Ebbets Field by Ross Berger (Cherry Lane Theatre), Kendra Levin’s Double Sophia (Cherry Lane Theatre), and The Apology which she co-adapted with actor Yusef Bulos (The Flea Theater). Additional credits include work by Mac Wellman such as Bellagio (the Playwrights’ Center), Fnu Lnu (Theatre Outlet), and The Bad Infinity (Mac Wellman Festival), and Caryl Churchill’s Not, Not, Not, Not, Not Enough Oxygen (Drama League). She is the director and co-creator of such projects as Jigsaw Nation (Relentless Theatre) which has toured across the country (South Coast Repertory, The Curious Theater, Ellis Island) and Hysteria: Silence in Stills (Women Center Stage Festival at the Culture Project). She has assistant directed numerous plays on and Off Broadway including the Tony Award-winning productions of A View From The Bridge and Side Man. She has been a directing resident at The Flea Theater and has directed workshops and readings for such organizations as The Public Theater, New Dramatists, The New Group, and The Kitchen. Currently an Affiliated Artist at New Georges, Hayley is the recipient of the Ruth Easton Directing Fellowship, The Drama League Directing Fellowship, the TCG New Generations Future Leader Grant. She holds both a B.A. and M.A. from Brown University.

Pangea World Theater illuminates the human condition, celebrates cultural differences, and promotes human rights by creating and presenting international, multi-disciplinary theater.

Pangea is a progressive space that brings artists from very diverse backgrounds and ethnicities together to create art for a multiracial audience. As we create work at this particular time in history, when demographics are rapidly shifting, Pangea offers itself as a place where a mutual respect for differences amongst our artistic collaborators exists, not merely a tolerance for diversity. This is a core value of our artistic vision. Since 1995, Pangea has worked to create and present new possibilities and new aesthetic realities for an increasingly diverse audience. Pangea’s artistic direction evolves out of relevant shifts in the social, cultural and political pulse of the communities in which we live and work. We bring artists together to confront stereotypes, push the boundaries of their art forms and challenge audiences with diverse perspectives and aesthetic. Each season Pangea produces, commissions and presents artistic, innovative and genre-crossing works, challenging the expectations of our artists and audiences.

The Martha Fast Horse Show: Sunday Morning 6/27/10 @ 6:00 AM CST

Producer & Host: Martha Fast Horse, Sicangu Lakota
Featured Song: “Silenced My Tongue” by Star Neyea
Special Guest: Star Neyea, Anishinabe, Manitoba Canada

2006 Grammy Award recipient, as well as NAMA Award recipient for her contribution to “Sacred Ground” on Silver Wave records where Star Nayea recorded & released her version of a remake called, “Mountain Song”. As well as being a past NAMA recipient for “Best Independent Recording, for Star Nayea’s freshman EP release entitled “Somewhere in a dream.”

Star Nayea’s newest upcoming CD, “SILENCED MY TONGUE”, is yet more evidence of the undeniable mainstream marketability this First Nations Artist possesses. As Star embarks on her full length brand new CD this summer, in hopes in having it released by fall of 2006. Although Star’s newest music has yet to be recorded for availability at this time. At live shows people flock to the merchandise tables, in search of the Star’s newest music they have just heard live in concert, and wish to purchase. Yet another positive sign of what’s to come.

From the very beginning, life would pose a challenge for this strong Native woman and artist. As an infant of two months, Star Nayea was taken away from her Native American birth family, as part of the 1950s-70s baby sweep perpetrated by the United States and Canada. Adopted through the Lutheran Social services of Detroit, Michigan. Where then Star was then placed into an extremely abusive nonnative family, and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. luckily at an early age Star was able to escape from that abuse & her adoptive family to begin a life of her own.

Survival and music would play a huge part in Star’s overcoming adversity.
To this day, Star Nayea still searches, and Prays to one day be reunited with her Native American birth family. Growing into a young woman, she was surrounded by the Motor City Rock n Roll scene. With that famed MO-Town sound! This would inevitably hand Star Nayea her unique and undeniable soulful style. Star began to tear up the stages in Detroit! Moving on to Austin, New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Albuquerque, Phoenix, New Orleans, and Toronto just to name a few.

Star has had the pleasure of working with many highly accomplished Native American Artists. Robbie Robertson, Rita Coolidge & Walela, Buffy St. Marie, Ulali, Bill Miller, Indigenous, Joanne Shenandoah Chuck Billy (Testament), Gary Farmer, and of course Star’s long time friends Keith Secola, and Robert Mirabal. Nonnative artists include, being on the same bill as Mr. Willie Nelson, serving as an opener for Tommy Shaw & Super 80′s rock group Styx. While living In New York, Star had the pleasure of a few jams sessions with Todd Wolf, (former Guitarist for Sheryl Crow).

For the past five years, Star Nayea has appeared across Indian country at Casino’s,
Native Music festivals, as well as working with native youth on wellness & prevention
all over indian country.

Star Nayea carries herself with an abundance of undeniable power, wisdom, and emotion that delivers… Every time!

Giving back to the youth. Six years ago Star Nayea developed a wellness & prevention program for Native youth nation wide called ‘The Healing Power of Music.” Where she travel all across Indian country with her motivational program sharing & singing her stories with the youth & listens to their personal struggles & hopeful dreams. It’s truly an inspiring moment to watch Star Nayea in action while being embraced by the youth she reaches out to.

Producer & Host: Martha Fast Horse

Featured Songs: Intro: “Gimme Shelter” by Rolling Stones. Outro: “Good Day Sunshine” by The Beatles

Special Guest: Tom Barnard

Tom Barnard (born November 7, 1951) is an American talk radio host and former voice-over talent. He is currently the host of The KQ92 Morning Show broadcast in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

Barnard was born in Long Prairie, Minnesota and raised in North Minneapolis. He and his wife Kathryn Brandt live with their two children in Golden Valley, Minnesota.

Before coming to KQRS, Barnard worked at numerous stations including WDGY and KSTP (as “The Catman”). Until 1986, Barnard was the booth announcer for KSTP-TV.

Barnard, and then-partner Dan Culhane, started the “Tom and Dan” show in 1986 featuring sports reports from WCCO-TV sports anchor Mark Rosen. At one point, the team of Barnard and Culhane spearheaded a write-in campaign to elect Rosen For Governor of Minnesota. Culhane was eventually pushed out of the broadcast in a personnel move, while Rosen was “persuaded” by WCCO-TV’s parent company to move his morning sports to WCCO-AM

Barnard is very reclusive, refusing virtually all media interviews and rarely making public appearances. However, Barnard and Culhane were guests with two other Twin Cities radio show duos on a local morning television show in 1988.

With Podcasting technology, the show has reached national and international audiences. Regardless of the growth in his show’s market, Barnard continuously assures listeners that “The Morning Show” will maintain its focus on the news, weather, sports and traffic of the Minneapolis-St.Paul area.

Although he is semi-retired from voice-over work, he can currently be heard in radio ads for Home Depot. For many years Barnard’s voice was heard in various markets, introducing shows and appearing on commercials.

Special Guest: Saginaw Grant, Traditional Dancer-Actor-Mentor-Lecturer-Writer-Activist

Special Guest: Andrea Montoya, Actor-Dancer-Choreographer, and founder of Circle of Nations Productions

“One who remains humble will never be humiliated”

American Indian Actor /Traditional Dancer/Spiritual Speaker, Saginaw Morgan Grant was born to Sarah and Austin Grant Sr. at Pawnee Indian Hospital in Pawnee, Oklahoma. He was raised on a farm in Cushing, Oklahoma with two brothers and one sister. Having had a traditional upbringing by both parents, Saginaw was especially influenced by his grandparents. his grandpa Kirvin was a strong Medicine Man and his other grandpa Saginaw (whom he is named after) was also a very spiritual man. They taught Saginaw their customs, culture, and traditions and the importance of this way of life. As a result Saginaw witnessed many special ceremonies and events taught to only the very few.

Saginaw says, “My family gave me the spiritual guidance I needed as a child and because of this I had a good childhood. I have always embraced my spirituality and traditions.”

As a young adult, Saginaw experienced all the situations in life both good and bad that every young person faces in today’s society. Yet he overcame the obstacles that challenged him, and with that he took his courage to become the man he is today.

During his life in Oklahoma he took on employment in various industries such as dry cleaning, also gaining knowledge and a better understanding in the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and other vocations in which he enjoyed interacting with people. This gave him the opportunities to hear different philosophies, beliefs and religions.

He states,”I gained a better understanding of people and their culture and I was able to learn something good from all of them”. This also taught him to keep an open mind which also helps in better understanding people from all walks of life.

He currently resides in the Southern California area with his wife. He is also called upon for counseling, lectures, and special events, while continuing to pursue his acting career.

Saginaw has been blessed with many special requests all of which he is grateful.

Some of the extraordinary events that have taken him worldwide are:

Delegate to the United Nations Conference on Human Rights, sponsored by Germany.

College Key-Note Speaker

Headstaff at various pow wows in Southern & Northern California and throughout the U.S. and Canada.

His acting career has proven that his goals are endless. He has worked with other well known celebrities such as: Anthony Hopkins, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Urich, Rita Coolidge just to name a few. This year he will be seen in the tv shows, “Eagleheart” and the upcoming MTV Comedy show “The Dudesons” where he portrays himself as a mentor to the men performing crazy and dangerous stunts and the movie thriller, “Maneater” which he completed filming in early 2009.

Saginaw participates in many native gatherings when possible in the Southern California area and he says” The drum is the heart of my people, and as long as the drum beats there will always be my people”.

The sunset of an era is fast approaching, only for the dawn of a new era to at last manifest. Resolution is the answer to bring a societal healthy mindset or better still, evolution is the solution for the resolution for metamorphis to evolve.

Andrea dancer/choreographer is so honored to be invited as a part of the Red Crystal Gala’s Ball first charitable ball in support of native women against domestic violence and sexual assault and will perform a dance of metamorphis in an interpretive dance. It depicts the pain of a broken woman in which her grief succumbs her to a vegetative state. The spirits speak to her and tell her she must awake and shed the cocoon around her and come to life and live anew and become all that she can, walking in harmony and balance forevermore.

Andrea is also an actor who recently finished a Steven Judd film short entitled “Search for the World’s Best Indian Taco”

Andrea is also proud to present her newly forming company, Circle of Nations Productions, a versatile company, enlisting the talents of actors, dancers, musicians and mentors, teachers, doctors in utilizing an indigenous form of inspirational theater and workshops to create heartfelt and socially conscious productions.

Learning never ends until we take our last breath. The continuation of the traditional thought of life, which has been lost through over assimulation, is about relearning in mindset and carried on to each subsequent generation.

The Minnesota Immigration Rights Action Coalition, one of 40 groups that makeup the May 1st Coalition, organized the (5th Annual) International Workers Day March that took place here in Minneapolis on May 1, 2010. Approximately 2,500 people showed up to protest the racist SB1070 Arizona law and demand equal rights for immigrant workers. We also discuss the need for comprehensive immigration reform in this country and strategize what that would look like.

Featured Song: “By The Time I Get To Arizona” by Toki Wright

Toki Wright has breathed new life into Public Enemy’s timeless anthem “By The Time I Get To Arizona.” This new version was created in response to a bill signed into law in the state of Arizona that states “all immigrants must carry documentation verifying their immigration status.” Police officers now have the authority to ask to see the information from any individual that is deemed “suspicious.” Essentially, a bill that legalizes racial profiling: if you look like an immigrant, you can be hauled off to jail. Toki’s scathing indictment pays due respect to the original classic, once again turning hip-hop into the true “CNN of the people.” Download the song for free, share it with friends, and check this link to learn about 5 Actions You Can Take Immediately Against SB 1070 – strangefamousrecords.com
