The Martha Fast Horse Show: Sunday Morning 4.11.10 @ 6:00 AM CST

Producer & Host: Martha Fast Horse, Sicangu Lakota

Featured Song: A Song from the Soundtrack of Last of the Mohicans

Special Guests: Greg Paquin, Red Lake Ojibwe & Curtis Buckanaga, Leech Lake Ojibwe

Sunday Martha’s two guests include Greg Paquin, a member of the Red Lake Band of Ojibwe and candidate for the Minnesota State Senate from Senate District 4 in northwestern Minnesota, and Curtis Buckanaga, a member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and manager of the campaign by Nicole Beaulieu, candidate for the Minnesota House of Representatives from House District 4A, within that northwestern Minnesota Senate District. These two men address some of the issues of injustice that impact indigenous people today: lack of jobs, health care, justice in courts and jails, natural resources, power: both electrical and people-power, and the participation by Native American Indian people in the democratic process.

Citing the high rate of unemployment and incarceration and low incomes for indigenous people in northwestern Minnesota, Greg and Curtis talk about some of the experiences their stand for justice has brought them to and through. From the low rate of investment in the native communities coming from casinos, from leverage in high places by the Gaming Industry, the Enbridge power lines due for construction sited dangerously over a reservation school, the men sound a call for the people to join together. Greg is reachable at hotpasstheketchup@yahoo.com and via phone at 651-503-9493, and has a blog at http://nativeamericanindianlaborunion12.blogspot.com, and Nicole is at giizhigookwe@yahoo.com, with a blog at http://anishinaabecandidate.blogspot.com. An open forum and community dinner is set on these topics for Tuesday, April 20 at 5 PM, at Bemidji State U, at the American Indian Resource Center, 1500 Birchmont Drive #21 N.E., in Bemidji. People may give a free-will offering, no one will be turned away.

The Martha Fast Horse Show: Sunday Morning 3.28.10 @ 6:00 AM CST

Producer & Host: Martha Fast Horse

Featured Song: ‘Vision Quest’ By Brule AIRO

Special Guests: Randall Simmons, Jos Linn, and Paul Hoffinger

Sunday’s show is an interview with Randall Simmons of the Navajo Nation Washington Office in Washington, DC, and with Jos Linn, U.S. organizer for RESULTS, a citizens group working with solutions for poverty and hunger. Jos is in Des Moines, Iowa. Both discuss the recent legislation for health care reform passed by Congress and signed by the President.

Randall discusses the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (http://www.ihs.gov/AdminMngrResources/reauthor/), which was re-authorized within the legislation, its emphases in areas of greater reciprocity for health professionals within the states, mental health, and substance abuse treatment and prevention, coordinating work between the Indian Health Service (IHS) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Jos talks about ongoing work by RESULTS for a single-payer system, new funding for Community Health Centers and expanded access for Medicaid, with increased reimbursement rates for it. He says it would be useful for people now to thank people for their vote, if they voted for the bill, and encourage them to look for what is being accomplished in it, if they opposed it. PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release

CHEYENNE RIVER SIOUX TRIBE CONTINUES TO ACCEPT DONATIONS OF FUNDS AND SUPPLIES TO ADDRESS THE DISASTER CRISIS

Eagle Butte, South Dakota (January 31, 2010) – The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe declared a state of emergency in central South Dakota, an Indian reservation approximately the size of Connecticut with nearly 15,000 residents. The Tribe awaits a Presidential disaster declaration.

Thus far, the Tribe has graciously accepted help from Indian Country and beyond, including Wal-Mart, Inc., the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, the Oglala Sioux Tribe, the Santee Sioux Tribe, Hawkwing, Inc., Joseph Kennedy II and CITGO, American Indian Relief Council, National Indian Gaming Association and the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Inc. More help and assistance is still needed.

The ice storm of January 21, 2010, followed by a blizzard and bitterly cold temperatures, resulted in reservation-wide power and water outages. Our water and utility companies remain diligently at work restoring essential services to the Reservation, however, several elderly, ranching and rural communities remain without power or water. Supplies are needed to help get these communities through the winter, and donations are needed to address the costs of the immediate crisis, response and recovery.
